Neither pitcher was ready to quit — and neither team could break through — until the 22nd inning finally brought relief.
On August 13, 1950, Rochester’s Tom Poholsky and Jersey City’s Andy Tomasic squared off in what became one of the longest pitching duels in International League history. After two innings, both teams had tallied two runs — and then went scoreless for nearly five hours. Both starters refused to yield, pitching into the 22nd inning. At last, Rochester pushed across a run in the bottom of the 22nd to claim a 3-2 victory. Poholsky earned the win, having thrown an astonishing complete game that lasted five hours and fifteen minutes.
