It started with control problems and ended with chaos, all on a play you almost never see.
On June 11, 1993, Mariners right-hander Erik Hanson watched a 2–0 lead vanish in the fourth inning after walks, a hit batter, and a two-out jam. Stan Javier’s single to left should have limited the damage, but a late throw home sailed past the catcher, and Hanson’s desperate and wild throw trying to get Javier at third only made things worse. By the time the ball was recovered, four runs had scored on what the box score could only call a single. The Angels went on to an 8–2 win, but the inning was remembered for how quickly ordinary baseball turned bizarre.
