One player’s strange night on the bases became the game’s most memorable storyline.
On June 27, 1986, the Giants edged the Reds 7–6 in 12 innings on Mike Aldrete’s sacrifice fly that scored Chili Davis. But the strangest storyline belonged to Giants second baseman Robby Thompson, who set a major league record by being thrown out stealing four times. The first three came on failed hit-and-run plays, each time when Jeff Leonard swung and missed, leaving Thompson helplessly caught. The fourth came in the 11th when Reds pitcher John Franco picked him off, sealing Thompson’s place in the record book for a night he’d rather forget.
