For about a month in 1969, Babe Ruth’s official career homerun total was increased from 714 to 715. A discovery by a team of researchers reviewing the details of past games persuaded the Baseball Records Committee to reach their original decision in April 1969.
The decision was met with criticism by those who outlined the implications of applying current baseball rules and thinking to past games and argued for the Committee to “Let Sleeping Records Lie”.
Apparently persuaded, the Committee reversed it’s decision the following month, Ruth’s official total remains at 714.
