Bob Uecker’s knack for comedy didn’t start in the broadcast booth.

Before Game 2 of the 1964 World Series between the Cardinals and Yankees, Bob Uecker spotted an unattended tuba belonging to a Dixieland band member and couldn’t resist. He pranced around the field, blowing into it (see photo) and even catching balls thrown his way with the instrument — to the delight of fans and teammates alike (read Uecker’s account of his musical background in his hometown paper). The tuba’s owner, however, was less amused, demanding compensation from the Cardinals for the dents Uecker left behind. While he succeeded in loosening up the team, the Yankees went on to win the game 8–3.
