On July 27, 1965, the Milwaukee Braves wasted no time in Houston’s new Astrodome, with Felipe Alou blasting the first pitch of the game into the seats. The Astros’ signature fireworks — reserved for their own homers — never got a chance to shine as Milwaukee’s bats did all the damage in a 7-1 romp. When Joe Torre joined the fun with a homer of his own, the Braves unveiled a makeshift fireworks celebration of their own by the visitors dugout, featuring sparklers and cherry bombs. Fans expecting an Astros light show instead got an unexpected taste of Milwaukee mischief. The Braves left town with the win—and bragging rights for the brightest display of the night.
