On August 3, 1987, Columbia Mets manager Butch Hobson was ejected after arguing a call at first base, and then the fun began. Before leaving the field, Hobson scooped up the base and carried it back to the clubhouse. Unable to proceed without the base, a bat boy was eventually sent to retrieve it. Hobson handed back the bag—only now painted bright orange. The bold move was Hobson’s way of making sure the umpires wouldn’t miss first base again.
