It took nearly four hours for someone to finally cross the plate at Comiskey Park.
On August 13, 1954, Chicago’s Jack Harshman and Detroit’s Al Aber traded zeroes for 16 innings in one of the decade’s great pitching duels. The deadlock finally broke when Minnie Miñoso ripped a triple down the right-field line, allowing Nellie Fox to score the game’s lone run. The 1-0 victory gave Harshman his 10th win and 4th shutout of the season—but not without controversy. Tigers manager Fred Hutchinson argued that an usher had interfered with the play, but the umpires stood firm, sealing the win for Chicago.
