Rickey Henderson and Tim Raines dazzled becoming the second and third with stolen bases across four straight decades. But the honor for being the first belongs to none other than Ted Williams, famed more for towering homers and soaring batting averages than swiping bags. Williams, one of the greatest pure hitters ever, quietly spread his 24 stolen bases across the ’30s, ’40s, ’50s, and then added the ‘60s in a game on July 22, 1960. A reminder that even legends of power can have a touch of unexpected speed.
