One player figured into every turning point of a tight Detroit victory.
On June 22, 1958, the Detroit Tigers edged the New York Yankees 1–0 behind a crisp pitching duel between Frank Lary and Duke Maas. The game’s only run came when Al Kaline homered off Maas. In the sixth, the Yankees’ best chance vanished when Maas tried to score from second on a Mickey Mantle single. Kaline fielded it cleanly and fired home to cut him down at the plate.
