On July 19, 1955, Pittsburgh’s Vern Law delivered an unforgettable performance, pitching 18 innings in a marathon showdown against the Milwaukee Braves. Law allowed just 9 hits, walked 2, and struck out 12 over the equivalent of two complete games. After being lifted for a pinch hitter with the score tied 2-2, Law was quoted as saying “I felt fine and wanted to stay in.” The Pirates ultimately triumphed in the 19th, sealing a victory in one of baseball’s true endurance tests.
