On October 14, 1969, 22-year-old Nolan Ryan made the only World Series pitching appearance of his Hall of Fame career—and it wasn’t as a starter. Entering Game 3 with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Ryan shut down the Orioles and went on to throw 2 1/3 scoreless innings to lock up a 5-0 Mets win. The victory put New York ahead in the series they would go on to win in five games.
