In the August 4, 1979 Braves vs Astros game, Phil Niekro’s knuckleball made history — for better and worse. Facing the Astros, Niekro’s knuckleball was virtually unhittable, but it also had a mind of its own. In the 5th inning, he unleashed four wild pitches — setting a single-inning record — and tacked on two more later to finish with six, the most ever in a game. Though he still kept Houston’s bats quiet, the outing became unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. It was one of those days when even a Hall of Famer couldn’t tame the knuckler.
