What began as a giveaway night for Red Sox fans ended in a confetti storm of disappointment.

On August 14, 2001, fans at Fenway Park received Derek Lowe posters as part of a Red Sox promotion. But by the top of the ninth, the celebration had turned to frustration. Called in to close against the Mariners, Lowe faced just three batters — all of whom singled — and gave up the game-tying run in what would become a Mariners win in extra innings. The Fenway faithful responded not only with boos, but with hundreds of shredded posters fluttering down onto the field. What began as a night to honor their closer ended with a blizzard of paper and frustration.
