One dominant June night hinted that something historic was unfolding in the Bronx.
On June 16, 1978, Yankees left-hander Ron Guidry overwhelmed the Angels, striking out 18 in a four-hit, 4–0 shutout. The win pushed Guidry to 11–0 in a season that would end with a 25–3 record, a 1.74 ERA, and the Cy Young Award. Just as importantly, it kept New York within striking distance of the Red Sox in a pennant race for the ages.
