In what some call the greatest pitching performance of the modern era, Cubs rookie Kerry Wood struck out 20 hitters in a complete game 1 hit 2-0 win over the Houston Astros. The only baserunner came on an infield single by Astros shortstop Ricky Gutierrez which bounced off the glove of the Cubs third baseman Kevin Orie. Wood struck out every batter at least once while not issuing a single walk. His performance tied the record for most strikeouts in a game, previously set by Roger Clemens in 1986 and 1996.
