The Splendid Splinter’s temper cost him big after an extra-inning win over the Yankees. On August 7, 1956, the rivals played into the 11th with no score. Williams spit three times at the record Red Sox crowd after they jeered him for an error in the top half of the inning. After Williams drew a bases-loaded walk in the 11th to beat the Yankees 1-0, he threw his base “a country mile.” Ninety minutes later, he was hit with a $5,000 fine — tying Babe Ruth for the largest ever given to a player at the time. GM Joe Cronin said Williams regretted it in the moment, but when pressed by reporters, the Splendid Splinter’s fiery comments suggested otherwise. Even in victory, Williams was never one to back down.
