On August 10, 1944, Charley “Red” Barrett of the Boston Braves delivered a performance that redefined efficiency.
Facing his old team, the Cincinnati Reds, Barrett threw only 58 pitches to complete a 2-0 shutout — the fewest ever in a nine-inning game. The entire contest lasted just 1 hour and 15 minutes, making it one of baseball’s quickest games on record. Barrett didn’t walk a batter, struck out none, and gave the Reds nothing but frustration. It remains one of the most economical gems ever tossed in MLB history.
