One June afternoon flipped expectations and tightened a pennant race.

Facing the Yankees on June 12, 1922, St. Louis Browns pitcher “Shucks” Pruett authored a day few could imagine, striking out Babe Ruth three times in a 7–1 win. Labeled a “college pitcher” in headlines, Pruett pulled off a feat Ruth experienced just 23 times across 2,503 career games. Even with 714 home runs and 1,330 strikeouts, days like this were rare for the Babe—and costly for New York. The victory nudged the second-place Browns a step closer to the American League–leading Yankees.
