On August 12, 1966, Cincinnati’s Art Shamsky didn’t even enter the game until the eighth inning — but what followed was one of the greatest hitting performances for a late inning substitute.
With the Pirates ahead by a run, Shamsky entered the game in the eighth and hit a two-run blast that pulled the Reds ahead by a run. He followed that with a solo shot to tie the game in the 10th, and then tied the game once again with another solo shot in the 11th. Three at-bats, three key homeruns. Despite his heroics, the first-place Pirates ultimately prevailed in the 13th, 14–11, in a game that featured 11 total homers.
