The California Angels and Boston Red Sox met on June 14, 1974, and more than four hours later, fans had been treated to a couple of epic performances.

In a game that one writer said “could have entitled the “Boston Marathon”, Angels starter Nolan Ryan threw 235 pitches and struck out 19 over 13 innings. Ryan talked manager Bobby Winkles into some extra time before coming out in the 13th inning.

Meanwhile, Red Sox starter Luis Tiant — “whose style resembles that of a marionette and the mercy of a mad puppeteer” — went all the way for the night straight game, but lost in the bottom of the 15th.
