A soggy day in 1941 turned comedic when the Pirates’ manager brought an umbrella onto the field to make his point.

August 19, 1941 was a washout for most of baseball — except at Ebbets Field, where the Dodgers and Pirates slogged through a doubleheader in the rain. Brooklyn took the opener easily, and when they jumped ahead early in Game 2, the Pirates tried to stall, hoping the game would be called. When their pleas were ignored, manager Frankie Frisch emerged from the dugout holding an umbrella borrowed from a reporter, to the delight of fans and the fury of umpire Jocko Conlon. Frisch was promptly ejected, and the Dodgers went on to win 5–2. His bit of rainy-day theater cost him a $50 fine — and a place in baseball’s long list of memorable ejections.
