On November 4, 2001, the Diamondbacks did what almost no one ever could — score against Mariano Rivera when it mattered most.

With the score tied 2–2 in the bottom of the ninth in Game 7, Arizona loaded the bases, and Luis Gonzalez’s broken-bat single over a drawn-in infield sealed a 3–2 win and the franchise’s first championship. Rivera — whose 11 earned runs given up in his entire postseason career are one less then the number of people who’ve walked on the moon — couldn’t escape this one. The loss ended the Yankees’ bid for a fourth straight title and marked a stunning close to a World Series played in the shadow of 9/11 — with emotion, tension, and drama to the very last pitch.
