On July 24, 1979, Lee Lacy of the Pirates took off on a 3-1 pitch and was seemingly thrown out at second by Reds catcher Johnny Bench—but ball four had been called at the plate. Lacy - thinking he was out - stepped off the base and was tagged by Reds shortstop Dave Concepcion and again called out. After a 34-minute delay and a formal protest by the Pirates, the crew chief’s decision was upheld: the walk call overrode the out stealing call, and the out stealing call did not protect Lacy when he stepped off the base and was tagged out. Lacy’s trip to second became one of baseball’s strangest standoffs over a free pass.
